The Rise of Multi-Stanning in K-Pop

The more you dive into the K-pop fandom, the more fascinating it becomes as you start to notice the vast differences between international fans and domestic fans. One of the most noticeable differences is how many international fans are ‘multi-stans,’ while domestic fans rarely stan multiple groups. This unique divide has sparked conversations across the K-pop community, raising questions about loyalty, diversity in music taste, and cultural influences within fandoms.

What Is a Multi-Stan?

For those who are new to the K-pop world, the term ‘multi-stan’ refers to a fan who supports multiple groups—not just in a casual way, but with a deep and genuine investment in each group’s journey. These fans actively follow the promotions, albums, music releases, performances, and even behind-the-scenes activities of several groups. Multi-stans often engage with diverse fandoms, immersing themselves in the unique culture, creativity, and artistry that each group offers.

For example, someone could simultaneously be an ATINY (a fan of ATEEZ), an ARMY (a fan of BTS), and a BRIIZE (a fan of Xdinary Heroes), showing equal dedication to all three groups. They might attend concerts, purchase merchandise, participate in streaming campaigns, and engage in fan-led initiatives for all of their favorite artists, making them integral contributors to the success of multiple K-pop acts.

Why Do Domestic Fans Rarely Multi-Stan?

Interestingly, the term ‘multi-stan’ is more prevalent among international fans. Domestic fans in South Korea often remain loyal to a single group, sometimes viewing multi-stanning as a lack of true dedication. This is why idols are occasionally asked on variety shows, “Are you for or against fans supporting other groups besides your own?” For domestic fans, stanning multiple groups can sometimes be perceived as disloyalty or a lack of genuine fandom commitment.

The Global Expansion of Multi-Stanning

However, as K-pop continues its global expansion, multi-stans have grown in number and influence, often outnumbering single stans in online spaces and international fan communities. This shift brings about an important question: Is supporting multiple groups inherently wrong? Does it undermine the hard work of these artists? The simple answer is no. Supporting multiple groups celebrates the immense talent and dedication of all K-pop idols who pour their hearts into every performance and release.

The Benefits of Being a Multi-Stan

Multi-stanning also provides fans with a richer experience. It allows them to explore diverse music styles, concepts, and messages across different groups. With every group offering unique colors and identities, multi-stans gain a broader appreciation for the artistry within K-pop. For many, it’s less about loyalty to one group and more about supporting the industry as a whole.

Breaking the Stigma Around Multi-Stanning

Hopefully, the growing number of multi-stans will inspire more domestic fans to embrace the idea of supporting multiple groups. By broadening their horizons, these fans might uncover new music, innovative concepts, and fresh perspectives they might not have encountered within the boundaries of a single fandom. This openness could lead to a deeper appreciation for the diversity and artistry that defines the K-pop industry.

Stanning multiple groups doesn’t diminish loyalty—it enriches the fan experience by fostering connections across different fandoms and celebrating the collective hard work of K-pop artists. Each group brings its own unique story, message, and flavor to the table, and supporting a variety of them only strengthens the ecosystem of creativity within K-pop. It also builds a sense of community that transcends the limitations of language and culture, uniting fans globally in their shared admiration for talent and artistry.

At its heart, K-pop is a celebration of unity, passion, and the love of music. It’s about recognizing the dedication, sweat, and sacrifices made by idols to deliver world-class performances and meaningful art. Whether you stan one group or many, the most important thing is the joy and connection it brings to your life. The rising acceptance of multi-stanning is a testament to how K-pop continues to evolve, breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity, one fandom at a time. As the K-pop wave continues to grow, so too can the spirit of openness and mutual respect among fans, proving that music truly has the power to bring people together.
