K-pop supergroup BTS is set to make a highly anticipated full-group comeback, releasing its fifth studio album Arirang on March 20, followed by a large-scale concert at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21.
Titled BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG, the performance marks the group’s first full-group return in three years and nine months. The outdoor concert will span a 1-kilometer stretch from Gwanghwamun to City Hall, with 22,000 seats prepared and up to 260,000 spectators expected, including those outside the controlled zone.
Breaking away from the traditional closed stadium format, the stage will incorporate the urban axis of Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung Palace, transforming the city itself into part of the performance narrative. The show will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, known for producing the Super Bowl halftime show.
The concert will open with BTS members walking along the historic “King’s Road,” starting from Geunjeongmun Gate at Gyeongbokgung, passing Heungnyemun and Gwanghwamun before arriving at the main stage. The performance will feature new tracks including “Swim,” alongside global hits such as Dynamite, accompanied by 50 dancers and a 13-member traditional Arirang ensemble.
The event will be streamed live via Netflix to more than 190 countries, with an estimated global audience of 50 million viewers.
Industry observers say BTS’s return carries significance beyond a typical comeback, as the group has reshaped the global music landscape. U.S. media outlets have also expressed high expectations, with Billboard calling it “the return of a defining K-pop act,” and The Washington Post saying BTS is ready to heat up 2026 “like Dynamite.”
The performance is also seen as a showcase of K-pop’s cultural expansion, blending traditional Korean elements with global pop. Cultural critic Kim Heon-sik noted that Gwanghwamun could emerge as a symbolic cultural landmark for global fans, similar to Abbey Road in London for The Beatles.
Following the concert, BTS will launch a world tour in April, starting in Goyang, South Korea, and covering 34 cities with 82 performances. Analysts estimate the tour could generate nearly 3 trillion won in revenue, underscoring the group’s massive economic impact, often referred to as “BTSnomics.”
Ahead of the event, BTS leader RM shared on the fan platform Weverse, “We’re truly excited to meet you all. Since many people will gather, we ask everyone to enjoy the concert safely and responsibly.”
