The controversy surrounding BTS member Suga’s recent DUI incident has led to unexpected backlash for rapper and entertainer Lee Young-ji.
During the August 24 episode of her YouTube channel “No Prepare (Chaelin’s Jwi Bul Do Eopjiman),” Lee Young-ji introduced a sponsored alcoholic beverage, describing it as “zero sugar.” Notably, the caption used the term “sugar” instead of “suga,” leading some to speculate whether this was a subtle jab at Suga.
Lee Young-ji also reminded viewers that alcohol should not be consumed before activities like cycling, emphasizing the dangers of drinking and driving. While this statement is generally accepted, some viewers interpreted it as a pointed reference to Suga’s recent DUI incident, sparking online debate.
This isn’t the first time such comments have drawn controversy. SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan also faced similar backlash after cautioning against drunk driving, with some netizens accusing him of indirectly targeting Suga.
Suga, who was caught driving an electric scooter while intoxicated near his home in Hannam-dong on August 6, has faced public criticism despite apologizing. His blood alcohol level was 0.227%, a level warranting license revocation. Suga’s initial apology faced scrutiny, particularly because he referred to the vehicle as an “electric scooter” instead of an “electric kickboard,” and claimed he had only consumed one beer.
In response to the ongoing backlash, Suga issued a second apology on August 25, stating, “I apologize for the confusion caused by my hastily written first apology. This incident has tarnished the precious memories I’ve created with my members and fans, and I deeply regret bringing shame to the name of BTS. I am immensely sorry for the harm I’ve caused to the members and the team.”
